At Shand Podiatry in Aberdeen, we understand how uncomfortable and tough it can be to live with fungal toenails.

That’s why our experienced team of podiatrists offer highly effective treatment options tailored specifically to your needs.
We are passionate about helping you achieve better foot health through a range of treatments and advice. Our goal is to keep your nails comfortable, healthy and looking great.

What is lunula laser therapy

Lunula Laser® is the revolutionary low-level laser therapy bringing new hope to people suffering from the painful, discolored and disfigured toenails associated with onychomycosis, or nail fungus. Unlike other treatments, Lunula Laser® has no known side effects, pain,or downtime and is the easy, convenient way to experience healthy, clear nails again.

The Lunula Laser® laser targets fungus that lives in and under the toenail. The laser light passes through the nail without causing damage to it or the surrounding skin. Effective, the Lunula Laser® poses no known risk and harmful side effects of oral anti-fungal medications. Plus, this convenient in-office procedure typically takes only minutes to perform, with absolutely no recovery time required. In fact, as little as five 12-minute sessions are needed to treat the affected area.

Stop suffering the pain and embarrassment of unsightly nail fungus, and enjoy clear, beautiful nails today.

Lunula has been markedly studied – from the early in-vitro analysis to the extensive in-vivo studies – and its clinical utility to target painful and unsightly toenail infections has been substantiated. The unique dual-diode approach of Lunula effectively targets the causative infectious agent while fortifying the body’s natural defense mechanisms. This multifaceted approach is the first of its kind, providing patients with a truly effective, yet safe, option for onychomycosis.

As you will quickly learn, Lunula is supported by an unwavering clinical foundation of both histological and clinical evidence that upholds the viability of this approach and ensures an effective option for your patients suffering with onychomycosis. In fact, Lunula is so unique, Erchonia has filed multiple method and device patents specific to Lunula.

The United States study consisted of 54 great toenails subject to laser irradiation at 405nm and 635nm for twelve minutes at weekly intervals for four weeks. This study was used to obtain the Lunula Laser 510(k) FDA market clearance. Sixty seven per cent (67%) of all study treated toenails evaluated in this study met the study individual toenail success criteria. The average clear nail growth was an increase in 5.18mm.* Equally important, the clinical responses observed in all four trials were achieved without a single adverse event.

Histology – Lunula Mechanism Of Action

LunulaLaser is a dual-diode, low-level laser device that delivers a multifaceted treatment to target onychomycosis (OM) Lunulalaser follows the principles of photochemistry, a science that explores light’s effect cell function and behavior. The photochemical mechanism enables Lunulalaser to give a direct, non-contact treatment that produces no macroscopic sensation: no heating, tingling, burning. The mechanism of photochemistry is likened to the agonist effect of a drug, which describes the use of a certain molecule to start a secondary cascade. Laser therapy uses photonic energy to modulate secondary cellular reactions without the patient feeling the device working.
LunulaLaser impressive clinical response stems from its two therapeutic wavelengths: 405 nm (violet) and 635 nm (red). Each wavelength performs a very specific function to provide a comprehensive treatment to target OM. The manner in which the wavelengths are delivered represents an innovative and proprietary feature of LunulaLaser. Lunula administers the laser as a line-generated beam, which maximizes the treatment surface area. The fungal pathogen may not only affect multiple toes, but also may be found deep within a dystrophic nail or along the nail bed and root. The line-generated beam ensures that, regardless of where the fungal pathogen resides, an effective treatment will be administered.

What Is Involved In The Lunula Treatment Package

On the 1st treatment we will buff and reduce the nail plate and small micro holes will be drilled into the nailplate. This will allow the antifungal nail solution that we recommend post treatment to penetrate through the nail plate to the nail bed, the site of the infection.

  • You will then receive a 12 min session of laser therapy ( per foot)
  • Both of these treatments are pain free and do not require dressings or downtime.
  • We will then ask you to book in again for another 3 laser sessions spaced 2 weeks apart.
  • At 3 months we will ask you to book another appointment to have your nails buffed/ reduced and drilled. You will then receive another nail laser treatment.
  • At 6 months we will review your progress, more laser sessions can be purchased if required.
  • Along the treatment journey, photographs will be taken to monitor the progression of the clear nail growth.

It is important that you treat the nails, skin and footwear to prevent re infection. For this we recommend the application of lamasil spray to the nails and surroundings skin and scholls antifungal shoe spray. Both of these products are available for purchase from reception.
We recommend that all socks/ hosiery are washed at a high temperature and a disinfectant applied to the wash, napisan is a suitable product.

Lunula laser is a safe and effective treatment strategy for the treatment of fungal nail infection but good hygiene practice must be practised to prevent re- infection.

Other options when Lacuna is not suitable include:

  • Oral Terbinafine – An oral medication that is prescribed by your G.P. The tablets are taken for 3-6 months and carry a high clearance rate though some users can notice side effects.
  • Nail removal -If the whole nail plate is infected, thick and damaged it is often best to remove the nail plate and treat the underlying nail bed with antifungal spray as the new nail plate grows in. This procedure is done under a local anaesthetic and produces good results.
  • If you are simply looking for a quick fix aesthetically we offer a brilliant new treatment called ‘Nail reconstruction’. This involves the thinning of the nail and the application of several layer of product. The result leaves the nail looking like new. It is not a treatment for the fungus but If you require the nails to look great for a holiday or special occasion it can be a great help.

Bethany Skinner BSc Pod

Podiatrist

Hi, my name is Bethany and I have recently joined the team at Shand Podiatry.
I graduated from Queen Margaret University in 2021 with Bcs Hons in Podiatry.
I started my career working for NHS Grampian before making the decision to join Shand Podiatry in April of this year.
My interest in podiatry started when I was 15. I was curious to learn about an injury I had sustained through highland dancing. This interest while being treated led me to pursue an education and career in podiatry.
In my free time I still enjoy highland dancing although no longer competitively. I also enjoy helping out on the family farm and spending time with my friends and family.
I am looking forward to taking the next step in my career, and advancing my scope of practice.
