FUNGAL TOENAILS

At Shand Podiatry in Aberdeen, we understand how uncomfortable and tough it can be to live with fungal toenails.

That’s why our experienced team of podiatrists offer highly effective treatment options tailored specifically to your needs.

We are passionate about helping you achieve better foot health through a range of treatments and advice. Our goal is to keep your nails comfortable, healthy and looking great.

Depending on the severity of your fungal infection, our podiatrists may provide oral or topical antifungal treatments plus advice on nail hygiene techniques specifically designed for your condition.

Get in contact with us today at Shand Podiatry in Aberdeen – let’s get rid of that fungal infection!

Not only do they look unsightly but they can also spread infection to the skin of the feet so treatment is recommended.

The initial treatment involves the reduction of the discoloured, thickened mass of infected nail tissue painlessly using a scalpel and a drill.

Depending on the severity of the infection we recommend the following treatment options:

Our treatment of Choice is the Lacuna method, pain free, effective and risk free.

The lacuna method involves thinning of the infected nail followed by the drilling of tiny holes into the nail plate. This allows our chosen anti- fungal preparation (Terbinafine) to penetrate to the source of the infection. This hugely increases the chance of clearance of the nail infection. The nail should be sprayed at home daily for up to 6 months. We suggest returning to the clinic after 1-2 months for a review. This method is safe and is proving to be very successful.

Other options when Lacuna is not suitable include:

  1. Oral Terbinafine – An oral medication that is prescribed by your G.P. The tablets are taken for 3-6 months and carry a high clearance rate though some users can notice side effects.
  2. Nail removal -If the whole nail plate is infected, thick and damaged it is often best to remove the nail plate and treat the underlying nail bed with antifungal spray as the new nail plate grows in. This procedure is done under a local anaesthetic and produces good results.
  3. If you are simply looking for a quick fix aesthetically we offer a brilliant new treatment called ‘Nail reconstruction’. This involves the thinning of the nail and the application of several layer of product. The result leaves the nail looking like new. It is not a treatment for the fungus but If you require the nails to look great for a holiday or special occasion it can be a great help.

Bethany Skinner BSc Pod

Podiatrist

Hi, my name is Bethany and I have recently joined the team at Shand Podiatry.
I graduated from Queen Margaret University in 2021 with Bcs Hons in Podiatry.
I started my career working for NHS Grampian before making the decision to join Shand Podiatry in April of this year.
My interest in podiatry started when I was 15. I was curious to learn about an injury I had sustained through highland dancing. This interest while being treated led me to pursue an education and career in podiatry.
In my free time I still enjoy highland dancing although no longer competitively. I also enjoy helping out on the family farm and spending time with my friends and family.
I am looking forward to taking the next step in my career, and advancing my scope of practice.

GEORGE

“Central location with on street parking outside. Great service and flexible appointments. I have been to the practice for various injuries and pains such as ‘shin splints’ and plantar plate issues. Treatment included; massage, acupuncture, review on how I was running (treadmill) and I was also given exercises to do at home and lots information and tips to stop the problem reoccurring. I would like to thank Scott as it never has! A family run business who care about their clients and the results.”
